Artículo XI Asociados del Instituto del Acuerdo para la Creación del Instituto Interamericano para la Investigación del Cambio Global

A briefing document prepared by the United States of America for the 26th meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), recommending that the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) be invited to become an Associate of the Institute.

• Under Article XI, paragraph 1 of the Agreement for the Creation of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research, the Conference of the Parties is permitted to invite external states, intergovernmental organizations, industries, and other non-governmental or private organizations to become Associates if they support the Institute's Scientific Agenda and programmatic activities.
• Prior to the drafting of this document, the Conference of the Parties had invited three organizations to associate with the IAI: the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), the Tropical Water Center for Latin America and the Caribbean (CATHALAC), and the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP).
• The United States recommends that the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) be admitted as an Associate of the IAI. The AAAS is described as the world's largest scientific society and a non-profit organization that promotes scientific cooperation, ethics, and the communication of science to society, including through the publication of the journal Science.
• The AAAS and IAI have a history of cooperation in science-policy and capacity development, including the AAAS annual course on Science Diplomacy and Leadership Workshop since 2015, the AAAS-TWAS course on Science Diplomacy in 2016, the First Mexican Congress on Science-based Policy in 2017, and IAI Professional Development Seminars and Seed Grant Programs from 2015 to 2017.
• Potential future cooperation between the IAI and AAAS includes developing partnerships for global change research at national and regional levels, promoting science-policy dialogue to inform decision-making, and conducting joint capacity development activities.
