Article XI Associates of the Institute of the Agreement Establishing the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research

This briefing, prepared by the United States of America for the twenty-sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), recommends that the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) be invited to become an Associate of the Institute under Article XI of the Agreement Establishing the IAI.

• The United States recommends that the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) be invited to become an Associate of the IAI, asserting that the organization "meets the requirements under Article XI of the Agreement to become an Associate of the IAI". This status would provide a "more formal framework" for identifying and implementing collaboration areas.
• The AAAS is described as the "world's largest general scientific society" and the publisher of the journal Science. Its activities include promoting scientific education, defending ethics, and fostering scientific freedom through initiatives in "science policy; diplomacy; education and public engagement with science".
• The AAAS and IAI have a history of collaboration in capacity building and science-policy activities between 2015 and 2017. Specific examples include IAI participation in the "Science Diplomacy & Leadership Workshop since 2015", an "AAAS-TWAS course on Science Diplomacy in 2016", the "First Mexican Congress on Science-Informed Policy" in 2017, and AAAS involvement in IAI "Professional Development Seminars and Seed Grants Program in 2015-2017".
• Potential future collaboration between the IAI and AAAS includes developing partnerships for global change research at national and regional levels, promoting science-policy dialogue to "inform decision-making", and creating joint capacity-building activities.
• Prior to this recommendation, three organizations had been invited to become Associates of the IAI: the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), the Centro del Agua del Trópico Húmedo para América Latina y el Caribe (CATHALAC), and the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP).
