Outline of Intent to form a consortium between IAI, and the ICSU and UNESCO regional offices in support of Future Earth activities

The IAI, ICSU-ROLAC, and UNESCO are forming a consortium to implement research, capacity building, and outreach programs in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) aligned with Future Earth themes. The partnership focuses on two primary goals: developing secure, low-carbon energy systems and integrating risk prevention and management to mitigate natural disasters. The consortium aims to strengthen interdisciplinary research involving social, applied, and natural sciences to generate policy-oriented outcomes for the region.

• The consortium's primary objectives are to develop low-carbon energy systems that protect ecosystem services and to improve the prevention and management of risks to reduce the impact of natural disasters on humans and ecosystems.
• The consortium will focus on the Future Earth themes of sustainable energy and risk prevention and management, utilizing an interdisciplinary approach that combines social, applied, and natural sciences.
• In Latin America and the Caribbean, sustainable energy planning must balance various sources—including advanced bio-fuels, wind turbines, geothermal, hydro-power, and hydrogen production—while considering that over 70% of the population is urbanized.
• The region faces significant climate and environmental risks, including the sensitivity of the Andes to climate change, the influence of ENSO and PDO on hydrologies and ecosystems, and hurricane activity in the Caribbean and Central America modulated by the AMO and the intra-Americas sea low level jet.
