EC progress report

The EC progress report details the activities of the Executive Committee (EC) and the EC Bureau of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI). Key actions include the establishment of an ad hoc committee to draft terms of reference for a new Advisory Committee on Science-Policy Liaison, brainstorming strategies to increase member country involvement and funding, and the IAI's participation in the ENSOCIO-LA international consortium to foster research cooperation between Latin American and European countries.

• The 21st Conference of the Parties (CoP) mandated the creation of an Advisory Committee on Science-Policy Liaison to advise the CoP and IAI Directorates on designing science for policy and decision-making. To implement this, the EC 36 formed an ad hoc committee consisting of Argentina (chair), USA (co-chair), Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Uruguay, along with ex officio members from the Standing Committee for Rules and Procedures, the SAC, and the Assistant Director for Science-Policy Liaison.
• The EC 36 explored several strategies to improve IAI funding and member country engagement. Proposed ideas include using bilateral agreements with national funding agencies to create multilateral co-funding for research, inviting CoP member country scientists as observers on the SAC, facilitating regional dialogues on funding between national agencies, and supporting young scientists at high-level universities via IAI networks.
• The IAI participated in the ENSOCIO-LA project, an international consortium involving institutions from France, Czech Republic, Spain, Germany, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, México, Sweden, Trinidad & Tobago, and Brazil. This initiative created a database of 534 projects (186 on climate change, 261 on resources efficiency, and 87 on raw materials) and identified three priority cooperation areas: Biodiversity, land use change and climate services; Urban and rural Hydrology; and raw materials (waste).
• The EC Chair and IAI Director helped organize the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) conference for Latin America and the Caribbean in Montevideo, Uruguay, from March 17-22, 2014. Attended by approximately 220 experts from 19 countries, the event focused on defining a research agenda for climate services across sectors including health, energy, agriculture, and hydrology.
