Workplan for the science-policy liaison office

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) has established a workplan for its science-policy liaison office covering June 2013 to June 2015. The strategy aims to increase the relevance and credibility of IAI's scientific production among policy makers through institutional mechanisms, communication strategies, and use-oriented research.

• The science-policy liaison office is guided by three primary goals: establishing formal mechanisms for policy-science integration, positioning global change as a relevant policy issue to make IAI a leading provider of scientific information, and encouraging collective action via policy decisions and use-oriented research.
• Between June 2013 and June 2015, the office will establish a baseline to monitor its progress, which involves assessing IAI's current standing with policy communities, existing liaison tools, and the alignment of IAI research with international policy agendas. This will be achieved through interaction with national focal points and a review of documents, including the 2005 AAAS report.
• The office intends to strengthen international positioning by seeking formal recognition from international organizations and conventions to integrate IAI research into policy-making. Specific priority is given to the Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Convention to Combat Desertification, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, and the UN Open Working Group for the Sustainable Development Goals.
• The workplan includes targeted engagement with member countries across various sectors, including health, agriculture, environment, public works, science and technology, and foreign affairs. This process begins with a scoping period to map actors and identify opportunities, followed by the creation of tailored outreach materials and country visits.
• Regarding media outreach, the office will not contact media directly to promote IAI. Instead, it will focus on improving the capacity of IAI partners and projects to reach the media and building relationships with environmental and science journalists to promote the general topic of global change.
