IAI Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) Report to the Conference of the Parties

The IAI Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) report details the selection and implementation of 10 international CRN3 teams, the need to fill six vacancies in the SAC membership by June 2013, and the strategic integration of natural and social sciences through the Future Earth initiative and IAI restructuring.

• The SAC oversaw the review of over 110 proposals to establish 10 international CRN3 teams. This included a first round of 8 projects selected in July 2012 and a second round initiated on 27 August 2012, from which 2 proposals were selected after a peer- and panel-review of 11 downselected candidates. The SAC noted a recurring weakness in proposals regarding the linkage between Social/Human Sciences and Natural Sciences, as well as a lack of attention to IAI Strategic Goals.
• The SAC is currently understaffed, operating with 8 members instead of the 10 required by IAI statutes. Six vacancies will open in June 2013 due to four expiring terms and two existing vacancies. The SAC has requested that the Conference of the Parties appoint six qualified scientists, specifically seeking expertise in human dimensions and public health, while ensuring geographic, gender, and ethnic balance.
• International co-funding agreements for CRN3 projects have been developed with CONICET from Argentina and FAPESP in Brazil.
• The SAC is working with the IAI Directorate to use 'Future Earth'—a 10-year international research initiative focused on global environmental change and sustainability—as an organizing theme and framework to link natural and social sciences.
• As part of IAI restructuring, the IAI Directorate Office is moving to Montevideo. The SAC intends to integrate its efforts with the new IAI Science Liaison Office located in Brazil.
