IAI Directorate Report to the twenty first Conference of the Parties, 2013 for the period of July 2012 - April 2013

The IAI Directorate Report for July 2012 - April 2013 details the transition between Collaborative Research Network programs (CRN2 to CRN3), the implementation of capacity-building workshops across the Americas, and significant operational and legal challenges faced by the Institute in Brazil.

• The Second Collaborative Research Network (CRN2) and Small Grants for Human Dimensions (SGP-HD) programs concluded, having leveraged US$ 37 million from an original US National Science Foundation award of US$ 11.3 million. These programs involved 223 investigators from 122 institutions across 18 IAI member countries, resulting in 489 peer-reviewed journal articles and 127 books or book chapters.
• The IAI launched the third round of the Collaborative Research Network Program (CRN3) for 2012-2018, committing a total budget of US$ 8.4 million from the US National Science Foundation. The program initially selected 8 projects, later adding two more focused on Ecosystem Services to address a weakness in the integration of human sciences.
• A MacArthur Foundation-funded project in the Tropical Andes focused on climate-related vulnerability and risk assessments. Key outputs included a GIS-based Andean climate wizard, the development of an Andean version of the NatureServe Climate Change Vulnerability Index (CCVI) used to train 23 young scientists, and a science e-book on biodiversity and climate change released in English and Spanish.
• The IAI conducted several capacity-building events, including a workshop on the Index of Usefulness of Practices for Adaptation (IUPA) in Uruguay for 42 professionals, and a Training Institute on Adaptive Management of Water Resources in Chile for 24 professionals from 10 countries. Additionally, two colloquia on Knowledge Integration at the Science-Policy Interface were held in the Dominican Republic and Ecuador.
• The IAI faced severe operational difficulties in Brazil, including the layoff of four staff members by the Brazilian government after emergency contracts expired in October 2012. Furthermore, the IAI and its executive director faced a federal judge's order to seize assets over allegedly owed tax and social security contributions of approximately US$ 200,000, despite the IAI providing proof that all contributions were paid.
• The IAI expanded its science-policy liaison efforts by establishing a new directorate in Buenos Aires, Argentina, under a new host country agreement. Activities included a conference at Argentina's National Congress on urban responses to climate change and the development of a publication titled “Urban Responses to Climate Change in Latin America” in collaboration with ECLAC.
