CORE BUDGET REQUEST FOR FISCAL YEAR 2013/2014 and PRELIMINARY REQUEST 2014-2016

This document presents the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) core budget request for the 2013/2014 fiscal year and preliminary projections for 2014-2016. It details the operational costs required to maintain the IAI Directorate, including a transition of operations from Brazil to Uruguay, the management of several scientific research programs, and the outsourcing of IT services.

• The proposed core budget for the 2013/2014 fiscal year is US$1,296,714, which represents a decrease of US$34,822 compared to the 2012/2013 fiscal year budget of US$1,331,536.
• The IAI Directorate is transitioning its operations from Brazil to Uruguay. The 2013/2014 budget accounts for approximately 3 months of operations in Brazil and 9 months in Uruguay.
• The IAI is shifting its IT management from an internal position to an outsourced model. Following the departure of the IT manager in April 2013, the IAI is contracting an IT solutions company based in Argentina to provide server and security solutions.
• The core budget supports the management of several scientific programs, including the Collaborative Research in the Americas (SGP-CRA), which is entering its second year and will run until 2014, and the CRN III program (2012-2016).
• The United States is the largest contributor to the core budget, providing US$762,000, which represents 60.75% of the total contributions.
• Preliminary budget projections for the following two years show a planned increase in total core budget expenditures, reaching US$1,370,480 for 2014/2015 and US$1,418,377 for 2015/2016.
