Strengthening Governance of the Inter-American Institute

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) proposes a tripartite governance structure distributing its Directorate across Uruguay (Integrated Operations and Finance), Brazil (Science Development), and Argentina (Science-Policy Liaison) to enhance its scientific and policy capacities while remaining budget-neutral.

• The proposed tripartite governance structure distributes the IAI Directorate across three countries: Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina. The Integrated Operations and Finance Directorate will be based in Montevideo, Uruguay; the Science Development Directorate will be located in São José dos Campos, Brazil; and the Science-Policy Liaison Directorate will be based in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
• The governance structure maintains four permanent organs: the Conference of the Parties (the principal policymaking organ), the Executive Council (nine members elected for two-year terms), the Scientific Advisory Committee (ten members elected for three-year terms), and the Directorate.
