Informe de la Dirección Ejectiva

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) outlines its activity plan for July 2011 to June 2012, focusing on renewing its scientific and training programs, launching new initiatives like the CRN3, and establishing a Center of Excellence for water security.

• The IAI plans to completely renew its scientific and training program over the coming year, as the CRN and Small Grants projects are scheduled to end in early 2012. New programs, which have already been evaluated, are expected to launch in the second half of 2011.
• Training activities include a session in Montevideo in September 2011 following a successful event in Asunción. Additionally, a training institute on climate information and public health will be held in Montevideo in November 2011 in collaboration with the University of Columbia's International Research Institute for Climate and Society and the Ministry of Health of Uruguay. Two colloquia on Science-Policy Interface knowledge integration are planned for mid-2012 and 2013 with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).
• The IAI is proposing the creation of its first Center of Excellence, stemming from water security cooperation involving the US, Chile, Mexico, and others. Regarding the CRN3, a call for proposals will be launched in mid-2011 pending NSF approval, with grants expected to be awarded in early 2012.
• Funding has been secured from the MacArthur Foundation for a project titled “Impactos del cambio climático en la biodiversidad de los Andes tropicales,” which focuses on climate-related vulnerability assessments and decision-making for land use and conservation in two Andean biodiversity hotspots. This research program with Andean country institutions began in June 2011.
• The Executive Directorate reports that operational instability over the last seven years must be resolved in the coming year due to increased workloads, as Directors have taken on direct research responsibilities alongside managing long-term programs.
