IAI Strategic Planning

This briefing outlines the preliminary considerations and framework developed by the Strategic Planning committee in May 2008 to guide the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) over the next 5-10 years.

• The IAI is developing a new Strategic Plan to move away from an 'opportunity driven model' and provide institutional guidance for the next 5-10 years. This plan aims to enhance the science-policy relationship for Global Environmental Change (GEC) in the Americas and demonstrate the IAI's expertise in inter-governmental perspectives of GEC.
• The need for a new Strategic Plan is driven by a changing context in GEC, including advances in science and management, an increase in stakeholders, a shift toward integrating human dimensions, and a move from identifying problems to seeking solutions via agent based modeling.
• A Strategic Planning Workshop scheduled for November is intended to produce a synthesis addressing four major themes: GEC Science (transformational topics and regional gaps), Knowledge Dialogs (science-to-operations transfer and stakeholder dialogue), GEC Governance for IAI (country engagement, funding, and alliances), and Cross-cutting Issues (coordination with Development activities and data management needs).
