Minutes of the Thirteenth Meeting of the IAI Conference of the Parties (CoP)

Minutes of the Thirteenth Meeting of the IAI Conference of the Parties (CoP), held May 23-24, 2006, in Porlamar, Venezuela, detailing organizational decisions, budget approvals, and scientific reports on global change research in the Americas.

• The CoP adopted new protocols for research involving human subjects, mandating that international protocols be applied to all IAI-funded research and requiring Principal Investigators (PIs) to obtain approval from a recognized human subjects committee before funds are released.
• The Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA) program, involving over 240 institutions and 1,800 researchers, found that Amazonia acts as a modest carbon sink (0.5-1.0 Mg C ha/yr) and that natural forest recovery takes longer than 70 years.
• Preliminary results from NOAA and IAI collaborations indicate an apparent reduction in heat transport within the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC), though these results also show large oscillations with decadal periods.
