IAI Conflicts of Interest and Standards of Ethical Conduct

This policy document outlines the standards of ethical conduct and conflict of interest (CoI) rules for the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI). It establishes guidelines for Directorate staff, the Executive Council, and advisory committees to ensure the integrity of funding and budget decisions.

• The IAI defines a Conflict of Interest as a situation where an individual has "divided loyalties between the IAI and another entity," stemming from three primary sources: personal interest, outside affiliations, and favors.
• Specific disqualifying conflicts for proposal reviewers include current employment, financial interest, or governing board membership at an applicant institution, as well as family relationships with investigators or collaboration on a project within the last 36 months.
• Strict restrictions are placed on IAI personnel regarding the submission of proposals: Directorate staff are prohibited from being applicants in any circumstances, and members of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) are banned from presenting proposals during their tenure and for 6 months after their service ends.
• To prevent the appearance of conflict after their tenure, IAI staff personnel are disqualified from participating in programs for one year following their period of service.
