Climate, Environment, and Health in the Americas

This fact sheet describes the activities of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) and the Belmont Forum, specifically focusing on the Collaborative Research Actions (CRAs) regarding Climate, Environment and Health (CEH).

• The Belmont Forum is a partnership of international science councils, regional consortia, and funding organizations that promotes transdisciplinary science on environmental change. Since 2009, it has managed 17 collaborative research actions (CRAs), which have supported 134 projects and over 1,000 scientists and stakeholders across more than 90 countries, covering topics such as land-use change, food security, freshwater security, biodiversity, and coastal vulnerability.
• The first round of funding for the Collaborative Research Action on Climate, Environment and Health (CEH), launched in 2019, provided over 12 million euros and in-kind contributions. This funding was sourced from 13 agencies across 10 countries to support 9 projects involving 69 researchers from 20 countries.
• A second round of CEH funding (CEH2) is being developed via a scoping process to identify funding gaps and science priorities. This process included virtual workshops hosted by the IAI in the Americas from July to September 2021. Additionally, the IAI is launching Professional Development Seminars on CEH and transdisciplinary science to help build research networks between policymakers and scientists.
