Action List Day 2: July 18

This action list details the decisions and recommendations made by the Executive Council (EC) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) during the second day of its thirteenth meeting on July 18, 2001, in Panama City.

• The Executive Council (EC) reviewed and recommended candidates for the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) across five specialized areas: Climate Variability and Risk Assessment, Integration of Science and Policy, Human Dimensions of Land/Climate/Urban Change, Biogeochemistry of Change in Land Cover and Sustainability, and Changes in the Composition of Atmosphere, Oceans, and Fresh Waters.
• The EC established several working groups and committees to address administrative and operational challenges, including a group to discuss "Suspension and Termination Procedures for IAI Projects", a group to address the "lack of commitment of some member countries", and an ad hoc Committee to handle "delays in member countries voluntary contributions in the future".
• The EC approved the Terms of Reference for the IAI External Review Committee, specifying that the evaluation should start in August 2001 and be completed within one year.
• Several financial and programmatic documents were approved for forwarding to the Conference of the Parties (CoP) VIII, including the IAI Core Budget Request for the 2001/2002 fiscal year, the 1999/2000 Financial Statements, and the General Guidelines of the IAI Science Grant Program – Phase II.
• The EC approved initiatives for scientific synthesis and regional collaboration, including a synthesis analysis of the Initial Science Program (ISP) results upon its 2001 completion and acting as a convener for a "Regional Workshop on Sustainability Science" in Brazil scheduled for late 2001 or early 2002.
