20th Meeting of the IAI Executive Council (EC) May 02 and 03, 2005 – Montreal, Canada Action List

The 20th Meeting of the IAI Executive Council in May 2005 resulted in several administrative and strategic decisions, including the creation of a group to analyze member country participation, the endorsement of Mexico's proposal to register the IAI with the UNFCCC, and the approval of CPTEC/INPE as an Affiliated Institution for the Program on Climate Variability in the Americas.

• The EC established a group, to be led by the new IAI Director, to analyze member country participation. This analysis is intended to go beyond financial aspects to include the financial needs of the IAI Directorate, the relevance and benefits of IAI activities to member countries, and how contribution schedules are affected by changing financial situations in those countries.
• The EC discussed a report from the Standing Committee on Rules and Procedures (SCRP) regarding the simplification of the CoP voting process. The EC generally supported recommendations for the SAC to present a slate of nominations twice the number of vacancies and the use of runoff elections when vacancies are not filled, though it did not select a specific option for resolving tie votes or non-majority results.
• The EC endorsed two proposals from Mexico: one to schedule an annual science-policy activity, such as a training institute or meeting, and another to register the IAI with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to ensure representation at the annual CoP through exhibits and side events.
• The EC approved the CPTEC/INPE proposal to become an Affiliated Institution of the IAI for the Program on Climate Variability in the Americas, following a recommendation from the IAI Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC).
• The EC approved the composition of a Committee to recommend final candidates for the IAI Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) members, consisting of Dr. Walter Fernández (SAC Chair), Dr. Paul Filmer (USA), Dr. Bárbara Garea (Cuba), and Dr. Don Maclver (Local scientist).
