Report of the 56th meeting of the IAI Executive Council

The report details the 56th meeting of the Executive Council (EC) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held via videoconference on 14 November 2023. The meeting focused on the election of the EC Bureau for 2023-2025, the status of the Core Budget, and progress reports on science and capacity-building activities following the 31st meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP-31).

• The Executive Council elected a new Bureau for a two-year term spanning 2023-2025, with Maria Uhle (United States) as Chair, Milagro Mainieri (Panama) as First Vice-Chair, and Stephanie Janetos (Canada) as Second Vice-Chair.
• As of the meeting date, contributions received for the Core Budget represented 46% of the total budget. A Financial working group recommended a 20% increase in voluntary country contributions for the first year and a 5% increase in subsequent years to account for inflation.
• The IAI Directorate is implementing science initiatives including a research and training program on the nexus of oceans, islands, and coastal systems aligned with the UN Decade of Ocean Science, and a Belmont Forum collaborative research action on the Amazon and Tropical Forests in partnership with FAPESP.
• Capacity building efforts include the Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) and the Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) fellowship program. A workshop on science diplomacy held in Panama in October 2023 resulted in the Panama Declaration, and Brazil, Paraguay, and Chile have expressed interest in co-organizing future itinerant training workshops in 2024 and 2025.
• The IAI has launched two new courses on science communication and transdisciplinary approaches to climate, environment, and health research, with additional courses on science diplomacy and transdisciplinary foundations planned for the following year.
