Report of the 54th meeting of the IAI Executive Council

The report details the 54th meeting of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Executive Council, held on 15 November 2022 in Montevideo, Uruguay, and via videoconference. • The IAI's core budget is currently sufficient for operations, supported by an emergency fund totaling USD 400,000 which can maintain the Directorate for approximately three months. However, the failure of some Parties to submit contributions negatively impacts the Directorate's capacity.
• The IAI's science program includes three Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Actions (CRA) focusing on the Amazon and tropical forests, human migration/mobility, and climate, environment and health II (expected launch in early 2023).
• The IAI is conducting a Regional Assessment to understand Party needs and inform near-term priorities. Next steps include data analysis from regional surveys, a literature review of global environmental change policies, and a survey of the scientific community in member states.
• The IAI is expanding its capacity-building and outreach through the Science Technology and Policy (STeP) Fellowship Program, a consultancy with the Wellcome Trust on climate and health (including mental health), and a special issue of the Journal of science, policy, and governance for early-career researchers.
• The IAI is collaborating with the Republic of Korea via the Korea Environment Corporation, which has provided interns and early career researchers to the Directorate and expressed interest in helping Latin American and Caribbean countries achieve carbon neutrality.
