Report of the 45th meeting of the IAI Executive Council

The report details the proceedings of the 45th meeting of the Executive Council (EC) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research, held on 19 June 2018 in Antigua, Guatemala. The meeting focused on administrative approvals, the establishment of candidate recommendation committees for advisory bodies, and financial status reviews.

• The Executive Council recommended that the Conference of the Parties (CoP) direct the Executive Council and the Rules of Procedure Committee, supported by the IAI Directorate, to create rules of procedure for electing the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC). Consequently, elections for the SPAC are postponed until these rules are considered at the twenty-seventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP-27).
• The Executive Council recommended that the Conference of the Parties direct the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) to conduct their meetings, whether physical or virtual, jointly.
• The Executive Council requested that the Conference of the Parties direct the IAI Directorate, in collaboration with the SAC, SPAC, and interested Parties, to draft a new IAI Strategic Plan.
• The IAI Executive Director reported a decrease in the core budget due to the decline in the purchasing power of the dollar since 1992, noting that many Parties have not increased their contributions since that year. While the EC decided to forward the core budget request to CoP-26, it reached a consensus that it was not the appropriate time to recommend an increase in Party contributions.
• The Executive Council approved the Auditors' report for the 2016-17 fiscal year, which provided an unqualified opinion stating that the IAI's financial statements fairly presented the organization's financial position in all material respects.
