RESUMEN DE LAS ACTIVIDADES VINCULADAS A LA IMPLEMENTACIÓN DE LA POLITICA DE GÉNERO, EQUIDAD, DIVERSIDAD E INCLUSIÓN DEL IAI

This report summarizes the activities of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) from May 2023 to April 2024 to implement its Gender, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) policy. The IAI aims to mainstream EDI into research funding, improve working environments, and increase the visibility of underrepresented groups in global environmental change research.

• The IAI has established seven specific operational goals for its EDI policy, focusing on increasing diversity within its advisory committees (SAC and SPAC) and staff, implementing EDI procedures for research funding, promoting positive research environments, and improving hiring and selection practices for awards and scholarships.
• The IAI's internal governance and staffing show a strong female presence: the Executive Directorate consists of 7 women and 1 man, the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) has 8 women and 4 men, and the Science Diplomacy Center Advisory Board includes 8 women out of 11 professionals.
• The STeP Training Program has supported 67 early-career scientists across three generations, with a majority female representation of 43 women and 24 men to promote inclusion in the science-policy interface.
• The IAI provided significant financial support through scholarships for early-career professionals and students in Latin America and the Caribbean, including 53 participants for the 2023 Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress in Panama (45 of whom were Panamanian), 30 professionals from Ecuador for the GDC Conference in Quito, and 32 rural students from Uruguay for a toxicology and environmental chemistry meeting.
• The IAI's EDI framework has influenced external organizations, specifically serving as the foundation for the Belmont Forum to develop its own Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) policy.
• The IAI is integrating EDI into educational and research initiatives, including a free online course on transdisciplinary research focusing on underrepresented regions in Latin America and the Caribbean, and a project funded by Global Affairs Canada titled “Women as Guardians of Biodiversity and Climate Resilience in Andean Peatlands.”
• To improve accessibility and inclusion, the IAI provided English-Spanish interpretation for over 15 science-policy panels at the UN General Assembly Science Summit in September 2023, as well as for LACI pilot projects, SAC/SPAC meetings, and Belmont Forum Tropical Forest CRA events.
