26th Meeting of the IAI Executive Council Action List

The Action List from the 26th Meeting of the IAI Executive Council (EC), held on June 17, 2008, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, details administrative decisions, approvals of previous reports, and recommendations to be forwarded to the Conference of Parties (CoP). Key actions include the endorsement of a joint capacity-building program with SCOPE and UNESCO, the nomination of a committee for SAC member elections, and requests for improved communication and outreach in the Caribbean.

• The Executive Council (EC) endorsed a proposal from the Director to create a joint program with SCOPE and UNESCO focused on interdisciplinary and intersectoral capacity building for government departments and scientists involved in global change. The EC recommended that individual IAI representatives contact UNESCO representatives within their own countries to move the program forward.
• The EC established a committee to recommend candidates for the election of IAI Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) members. This committee consists of the former SAC Chair, the Scientific Officer, local scientist Carolina Vera, and representatives from Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, USA, and Venezuela.
• To expand its reach, the EC requested that the IAI Newsletter and Caribbean member countries identify contacts and institutions in non-member Caribbean countries. Specifically, Jamaica committed to providing information on contacts within CARICOM countries.
• The EC recommended that the Conference of Parties (CoP) send a letter to the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology, the Directorate, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the INPE Director. This letter is intended to commend the Brazilian Government for its support of the IAI and endorse negotiations regarding the Directorate headquarters and the contracts of Brazilian IAI staff.
• The EC approved several administrative and financial items to be forwarded to the CoP for approval, including the Core Budget request for 2008-09 and the Auditor’s Report of the Financial Statement as of June 30, 2007.
