Eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP) of the IAI

This document records the decisions made during the Eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held in Panama City, Panama, on July 19-20, 2001. The meeting focused on administrative elections, the selection process for a new IAI Director, financial approvals for the 2001/2002 fiscal year, and the establishment of guidelines for science grants and external reviews.

• The CoP established a Director Selection Committee consisting of Carlos Ereño (Argentina), Antônio MacDowell (Brazil), Bárbara Garea (Cuba), Margaret Leinen (USA), Rudolf Romer (Venezuela), and the future SAC Chair, and approved the Proposed Selection Process for the IAI Director.
• The CoP rescheduled its next meeting to February/March 2002, moving it forward from June/July 2002, to ensure a new Director is elected before the current Director's contract expires at the end of March 2002.
• The CoP approved several operational and financial documents, including the Core Budget Request for the Fiscal Year 2001/2002, the Annual Program for 2001/2002, the Financial Statements and Auditor’s Report for Fiscal Year 1999/2000, and the General Guidelines of the IAI Science Grant Program – Phase II.
• The CoP approved the Terms of Reference for the IAI External Review Committee, specifying that the evaluation should begin in August 2001 and be completed within one year.
• The CoP elected four new members to the IAI Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC): Julia Nogues Paegle, Lynne Z. Hale, Luiz Fernando Loureiro Legey, and René Capote López, and authorized the Executive Council to elect a 10th member in Havana, Cuba, in November 2001.
