SACC: An international consortium for the study of ocean related global and climate changes in South America (CRN2076)

This fact sheet describes the SACC project, an international consortium studying ocean-related global and climate changes in South America, with a specific focus on the exchange processes between the deep ocean and the Patagonian shelf.

• The Patagonian shelf represents 4% of global continental margins and absorbs approximately 17 Tg C yr-1 (million metric tons of carbon per year).
• The fishery on the shelf break, which accounts for 3% of global production with roughly two million tons of fish and squid landed annually, shows signs of overfishing as evidenced by increasing jellyfish populations. This overfishing may impact plankton and the capture of CO2 via photosynthesis.
• The project aims to identify the physics, currents, and tides governing biogeochemical exchanges (including CO2, nutrients, and species) between the deep ocean and the continental shelf, and to improve global carbon models by understanding upwelling and cross-shelf exchanges.
• Freshwater inputs from the Patos Lagoon and the Rio de la Plata are significant for the diversity and production of the ecosystem in the Southwest Atlantic.
• The project and Argentinean institutions manage BioMare, an integrated oceanographic and fishery information system designed to support fishery policies, with plans to expand the system's reach beyond Argentina.
