TRopi-dRy Human, Ecological and Biophysical dimensions of Tropical dry Forests (CRN2021)

This fact sheet describes the TRopi-dRy research network, which studies the human and biophysical dimensions of Tropical dry forests (TdFs) in the Americas to promote sustainable management.

• The TRopi-dRy network has produced the first map of Tropical dry forests (TdFs) in the Americas, detailing their extent and trends in deforestation and conservation. In Costa Rica, this mapping is utilized as a legal foundation for monitoring conservation.
• Phenology monitoring indicates divergent productivity trends for dry forests based on geography: forests near the equator are more productive due to shorter dry seasons, while those further north and south experience slower growth and longer dry seasons. Specifically, productivity is increasing in Brazil and decreasing in Bolivia.
• Tropical dry forests are significantly fragmented by agricultural and touristic development. To address this, TRopi-dRy suggests implementing payments to local communities for environmental services and establishing TDF conservation networks.
