DIVERSUS: Functional biodiversity effects on ecosystem processes, ecosystem services and sustainability in the Americas: an interdisciplinary approach (CRN2015)

The DIVERSUS Collaborative Research Network is developing an interdisciplinary framework to analyze how land cover change (LCC) affects functional biodiversity, ecosystem properties, and the resulting ecosystem services that support human livelihoods across diverse environments from the tropics to the tundra.

• The DIVERSUS Collaborative Research Network aims to address the scientific challenge of integrating ecological studies on land use change and biodiversity with the understanding of how ecosystems contribute to human well-being. The network uses a framework that treats functional biodiversity as the link between land-use patterns and ecosystem properties, and ecosystem services as the link between those properties and the livelihoods of social actors.
• The project's goals include creating a scientific network to study the links between land cover change, functional biodiversity, and ecosystem services; producing the first comparison of land-use change effects on functional biodiversity; and developing empirical tools and recommendations for land-use decisions that consider stakeholder interests.
• Initial results from the project include the measurement of functional biodiversity via species composition and functional trait values, and the characterization of nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration under different land-uses in case studies located in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Alaska.
• Specific early research activities include using social surveys to identify ecosystem services and describe stakeholder livelihoods in Argentina, as well as analyzing the economics of ecosystem services in Costa Rica.
