INTER-AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL CHANGE RESEARCH (IAI) EIGHTEENTH MEETING OF THE CONFERENCE OF THE PARTIES (CoP)

The eighteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held in July 2001 in Panama City, reaffirmed the IAI's role as the leading intergovernmental organization for coordinating global change research in the Americas. The meeting resulted in eight resolutions covering the institute's scientific agenda, the approval of the 2001/2002 annual program and core budget, the establishment of an external review committee starting in August 2001, and the approval of the IAI Science Grant Program Phase II.

• The Conference of the Parties reaffirmed the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) as the primary regional mechanism for scientific and educational cooperation regarding global change. The IAI focuses on interdisciplinary research involving the atmosphere, sea, Earth, and environment, as well as social sciences, with a specific emphasis on biological diversity, ecosystems, and the socio-economic impacts of global change. The institute aims to provide an interface between science and decision-making to support regional strategies for adaptation, mitigation, and the reduction of vulnerability.
• The Conference established several administrative and operational approvals, including the selection process for the IAI Director, the General Guidelines of the IAI Science Grant Program – Phase II, and the Annual Program for 2001/2002. Additionally, it approved the Core Budget Request for the 2001/2002 fiscal year and the Financial Statements and Auditor’s Report for the 1999/2000 fiscal year.
• The CoP approved the Terms of Reference for the IAI External Review Committee, specifying that the evaluation must begin in August 2001 and be completed within one year. Furthermore, the IAI Directorate was authorized to issue an open call for proposals to co-fund "Summer Institute activities," utilizing remaining funds from the PESCA Program.
