Report from the Executive Council Chair

This report from the Executive Council (EC) Chair of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) details actions taken following the 24th Conference of the Parties (CoP) and the recruitment process for a new Executive Director.

• The Executive Council (EC) has directed the Science Advisory Committee (SAC), the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC), and the Directorate to determine the budget, effort, and time required to create specific dissemination products, including a chapter on Central America, a white book with a 1.5 degree chapter, and an anniversary book.
• To mark the 25th Anniversary of the IAI, the EC is establishing a strategic set of research priorities, beginning with a workshop involving EC members, CoP members, the SAC, and the SPAC.
• Following a search process that began with a position posting on August 15, 2016, and received 25 applications by October 7, 2016, the 25th CoP in Panama City unanimously appointed Dr. Marcos Regis da Silva as the Executive Director of the IAI. He assumed the role on June 1, 2017.
• The search committee selected Dr. Marcos Regis da Silva based on his 25 years of experience in academia, the United Nations system, and international organization secretariats, specifically noting his expertise in biodiversity, ecosystem services, and the use of science to inform policy.
