SEVENTH MEETING OF THE CONFERENCE OF THE PARTIES (CoP)

The seventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP) in Merida, Mexico, resulted in eight resolutions focused on the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI). These include the ratification of financial provisions, the approval of ethical conduct standards, the authorization of funding opportunities, and the establishment of a review committee for a 2002 external evaluation. Additionally, the CoP approved voluntary contributions for fiscal years 2000-2003, the 2000/2001 annual program, and the nomination of CATHALAC and CIESIN as associated institutions.

• The Conference of the Parties requested that member parties use official diplomatic channels to ratify an amendment to Article XIII, Section 1 of the Agreement Establishing the IAI, which concerns Financial Provisions.
• The CoP approved the "IAI Policy on Conflict of Interest and Standards of Ethical Conduct" and authorized the Executive Council to announce opportunities for new or extra funds available between the seventh and eighth meetings, based on Scientific Advisory Committee recommendations.
• A Review Committee was approved to perform an External Evaluation of the IAI in 2002, with its specific composition to be determined at the CoP-VIII meeting in 2001.
• The CoP approved the Annual Program for Fiscal Year 2000/2001 and the levels of voluntary contributions from member countries for the fiscal years 2000/2001, 2001/2002, and 2002/2003.
• Two organizations, the Centro del Agua del Trópico Húmedo para América Latina y el Caribe (CATHALAC) and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), were approved to become Associated Institutions of the IAI.
