Implementation of the Gender, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Policy and establishment of the new Indigenous Peoples Advisory Committee (IPAC)

This briefing document details the progress made by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) in implementing its Gender, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (GEDI) Policy and the formal establishment of the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Committee (IPAC).

• The IAI has made progress on goals 2–7 of its Gender, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion policy, though less progress was noted for goals 1 and 8, which concern the design of structural policies and the production of knowledge regarding the links between gender, EDI, and global environmental change.
• Following a call for applications open from 5 February to 19 March 2025, the IAI received 14 applications from Canada, Colombia, Uruguay, Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador, and Panama to join the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Committee (IPAC).
• The IAI has selected five individuals to serve on the first Indigenous Peoples Advisory Committee (IPAC): Myrle Ballard (Canada), Oliva Patricia Suárez Torres (Colombia), Francisco Ramiro Batzín Chojoj (Guatemala), Cristina Elizabeth Fueres Guitarra (Ecuador), and Guipsy Katherine Alata Ramos (Peru).
• The IAI is moving toward the establishment of a Local Communities Advisory Committee, which is intended to provide recommendations on the Institute's Scientific Agenda, Strategic Plan, and annual workplan to ensure equitable participation of local communities.
