Informe de la 32.a reunión de la Conferencia de las Partes del Instituto Interamericano para la Investigación del Cambio Global (IAI)

This report details the proceedings and decisions of the 32nd meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP-32) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held via videoconference on May 22-23, 2024. The meeting focused on financial planning, the relocation of the IAI Executive Directorate from Uruguay to Panama, the integration of Indigenous knowledge into climate science, and the expansion of the IAI's network of Associate institutions.

• The Conference of the Parties approved the operating budget for 2024-2025, which includes a 20% increase in voluntary contributions, and a preliminary request for 2025-2027 with annual increases of 5%.
• The IAI is transitioning its Executive Directorate headquarters from Uruguay to Panama. Due to legislative requirements in Panama and operational needs, the Parties requested a formal extension from the Government of Uruguay to allow the IAI to operate with diplomatic immunities and privileges until July 31, 2025.
• The IAI is working to integrate Indigenous and local knowledge into its scientific framework. This includes the proposed creation of two separate advisory committees: one for Indigenous Peoples and one for local communities, with a plan for implementation by the end of 2024.
• The IAI adopted a new Strategic Plan for the 2024-2030 period.
• Three new institutions were invited to become Associates of the IAI: the Center for Climate and Resilience (CR2) of the University of Chile, the Research and Innovation Support Foundation of the State of Santa Catarina (FAPESC) in Brazil, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama.
• The IAI's Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) saw the re-election of Omar López, Anahí Urquiza, and Mercy Borbor, and the election of Gilberto de Martino Jannuzzi as a new member.
• The IAI's Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) has launched training programs for policymakers, including an inaugural workshop in Panama in October 2023 and planned workshops in Brazil (December 2024) and Paraguay (May 2025).
• The IAI is implementing an open data policy using a data catalog hosted on Harvard Dataverse, which currently contains 23 datasets from projects funded between 2019 and 2022, and a publication database with over 600 entries.
• The IAI reported on climate-related impacts in the Americas, noting that the recent El Niño phenomenon contributed to a dengue emergency with over five million cases recorded in 2024.
