Implementación de la decisión sobre EDI y el nuevo comité asesor de los pueblos indígenas y las comunidades locales

This briefing document outlines the progress of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) in implementing its Gender, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (GEDI) policy and the establishment of advisory bodies for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities.

• The IAI has established a Gender, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (GEDI) Committee, which includes representatives from the IAI staff, the STePs Program fellows, the SAC and SPAC, the Belmont Forum, and national representatives from Argentina, Canada, the United States, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. The committee is co-chaired by Margot Hurlbert and María Schmukler.
• Following Decision XXXI/16 from the 31st Conference of the Parties, the IAI Executive Directorate and the GEDI committee developed a strategy for a new advisory body for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (PICL). Consultations revealed a central debate regarding whether Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities should be treated as a single entity, with Indigenous leaders arguing that their identities, knowledge systems, and worldviews are distinct.
• The document proposes two provisional decisions for the Conference of the Parties: first, that the IAI Executive Directorate provide GEDI training to staff and fellows to support the implementation of the GEDI policy; and second, that the IAI form two separate advisory committees—one for Indigenous Peoples and one for Local Communities—to serve as 'expert advisors' with their own workspaces and joint meetings convened by the SAC.
