Article XI of the Agreement Establishing the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research: Associates of the Institute

This briefing, prepared by the focal point of Chile for the 32nd meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), proposes that the Center for Climate and Resilience Research (CR2) be invited to become an Associate of the Institute under Article XI of the Agreement establishing the IAI.

• Under Article XI of the Agreement establishing the IAI, the Conference of the Parties can invite various entities—including states outside the region, intergovernmental organizations, and private or nongovernmental organizations—to become Associates of the Institute if they are interested in supporting the Institute's programmatic activities and Scientific Agenda.
• As of the writing of the document, ten organizations have been invited to be Associates of the IAI: the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Water Center for the Humid Tropics of Latin America (CATHALAC), the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), Future Earth, the Alexander von Humboldt Research Institute of Biological Resources, Mitacs Canada, Rede Clima, UWI, and CICAG.
• Chile is requesting that the Conference of the Parties invite the Center for Climate and Resilience Research (CR2), based in Santiago, Chile, to become an Associate. CR2's qualifications include an interdisciplinary approach to research on climate change and resilience, a goal to expand its research scope to South America and the Antarctic territory, and the development of 14 climate services and the Climate Risk Atlas of Chile (ARClim).
• The Center for Climate and Resilience Research (CR2) has contributed to Chilean public policy through the creation of the Observatory of the Climate Change Law in Chile, providing technical advisory to the Senate Environment Committee for the 2022 Framework Law on Climate Change, submitting initiatives to the 2021-2022 Constitutional Convention, and contributing to the design of the NDC presented by Chile at COP25.
• Associates of the IAI are permitted to participate as observers in Conference of the Parties meetings and may collectively nominate one member to the Scientific Advisory Committee via an agreed-upon procedure.
