Informe conjunto del Comité Asesor Científico (SAC) y el Comité Asesor en Ciencia y Políticas (SPAC)

This joint report from the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) details the activities, membership status, and recommendations of the two advisory bodies of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) for the period leading up to the 32nd Conference of the Parties (CoP-32) in May 2024.

• The SAC and SPAC have transitioned from monthly joint meetings to a structure where they meet jointly on the third Tuesday of each month and separately every two months to accommodate increasing responsibilities and allow for deeper dialogue.
• The committees have established several specialized ad hoc and permanent groups, including committees on Open Science and Data, Oceans, Islands and Coastal Systems, and Climate, Environment and Health (CEH).
• Members of the SAC and SPAC contributed to a policy report on water security in the Americas, which was based on the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) and disseminated in October 2023 at Latin America Climate Week and in December 2023 at COP28.
• The committees are collaborating on several international research and funding initiatives, including a project on integrated sargassum management with the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) for the GEF 8 funding cycle, and a Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action on tropical forests.
• The SAC and SPAC recommend that the IAI Executive Directorate improve communication between focal points, committee members, and the scientific community to increase the use of science in policy-making and better implement the IAI strategic plan.
• The committees urge the Conference of the Parties to develop robust funding strategies to ensure the IAI's long-term impact, including increasing party contributions and identifying external and voluntary non-financial resources.
