Report of the Financial Working Group

The Report of the Financial Working Group, prepared by the IAI Directorate, outlines a plan to ensure the financial stability of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) through adjusted voluntary contributions and the acceptance of in-kind support.

• The Financial Working Group identified several threats to the IAI's financial stability, specifically that voluntary contributions have not been adjusted for inflation in recent years and some Parties have ceased making contributions for several years.
• The working group recommends a phased increase in voluntary contributions from Parties, starting with a 20% increase for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, followed by annual increases of 5% in subsequent years.
• To address arrears, the working group proposes dismissing voluntary financial contributions to the core budget that are more than five years old (prior to 2019). For contributions missed between 2019 and 2024, the group suggests allowing Parties to provide in-kind contributions, such as staff secondments to the Directorate or hosting training events and scientific workshops.
• The IAI Directorate has implemented a new communication process starting in October 2023, where it sends annual letters to focal points specifying the required voluntary contribution for the fiscal year, accompanied by a country profile detailing the benefits the Party receives from IAI membership.
