Action_day1_SP_AP_

This briefing documents the actions and decisions taken during the first day of the 14th Executive Council (EC) meeting of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held on November 26, 2001, in Havana, Cuba.

• The Executive Council (EC) approved the agenda for its 14th meeting with two changes: the election of the 10th member of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) was postponed to the February 2002 Conference of Parties (CoP) meeting in San Jose dos Campos, Brazil, and a presentation on "New Initiatives" was added to the November 27 session.
• The CoP is scheduled to fill two SAC vacancies in February 2002: the 10th member position and a vacancy created by the departure of Dr. John Robinson. For the latter, the SAC must provide the IAI Executive Direction with a list of two to four candidates by January 31, 2002.
• Several documents and procedures are slated for final discussion and approval at the next EC meeting in Brazil in February 2002, including the "Suspension and Termination Procedures for IAI Projects," a joint document regarding member country commitment and voluntary contribution delays, and a document concerning the use of IAI funds for delegate travel to EC and CoP meetings.
• The EC requested that the IAI Executive Direction prepare a document detailing the investments made by the IAI in each member country compared to their contributions, as well as concrete scientific results from funded projects.
• The EC President reported that the Director Selection Committee would meet on November 27 to review the CVs of three candidates.
