Status Report as of April 30, 2003

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Status Report as of April 30, 2003, details the institute's financial standing for the 2002/2003 fiscal year, including core and program budgets, as well as administrative updates regarding staffing and office space.

• As of April 30, 2003, the IAI had received $531,370 in country contributions, which represented 56% of the approved contributions for the fiscal year. The largest contributor was the USA with $300,000, followed by Canada with $115,000 and Brazil with $80,000. The outstanding balance for the fiscal year 2002/2003 amounted to $764,288, or 81% of the contributions.
• Core Budget expenses from July 1, 2002, to April 30, 2003, were $142,858 lower than expected. Savings in 'Salaries and Benefits' were attributed to lower costs for the Executive Director—due to an Interim Director's lower benefits, relocation costs paid by a former employer, and fewer dependents—as well as a 3% salary adjustment for international staff instead of the maximum 5%.
• The IAI anticipated a cash balance deficit of approximately $12,000 by June 30, 2003. To manage this, the institute planned to limit expenses in the final two months of the fiscal year to basic requirements.
• Regarding program budgets, ISP III activities closed on March 31, 2003, with $136,000 in remaining funds to be reimbursed. The Small Grant Program consisted of 16 projects totaling $383,000, funded by an NSF Grant ($343,000) and the Director Special Fund ($40,000). Additionally, the IAI reduced contributions for years 3 and 4 of the CRN program by 9% because no additional funds were found to replace missing contributions from Argentina.
• Administrative updates include the recruitment of Ms. Anita Jose Soares as assistant to the Financial Officer starting April 28, 2003, and the authorization of up to 44 hours of overtime for the Clerk/Driver. Both positions are funded by INPE/FUNCATE as part of the Brazilian Government's support. Additionally, IAI paid for alterations to its premises to create storage and filing space authorized by INPE.
