8_FinSit

This report details the financial status of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) as of September 30, 2001, covering the core budget, country contributions, and specific research program budgets (CRN, ISP III, and PESCA).

• For the period of July 1st to September 30, 2001, actual expenditures were $6,964 below estimates. Savings were primarily driven by the absence of expenses for a Scientific Officer who was not scheduled to start until November 2001. However, overruns occurred in 'Professional Services' due to the hiring of a consultant for the ISP III Program and in 'EC/CoP/SAC Meetings' due to supporting Country Representatives in Panama and paying air fares for a meeting in Rio de Janeiro.
• The IAI forecasts a cash deficit of $24,284 for the 2001/2002 fiscal year, with expected expenses of $800,000 against forecasted member country contributions of $750,000. As of June 30, 2001, outstanding contributions totaled USD$ 777,838.
• The Collaborative Research Network (CRN) Program has $355,740 in unallocated funds from a total budget of $10,829,755. This includes a $1,031,270 contribution from Argentina's Agencia Nacional de Promoción Científica y Tecnológica. Due to Argentina's economic crisis, the IAI does not expect the second-year contribution to arrive soon and intends to use unallocated funds as a cushion.
• The ISP III Program has $187,726 in unallocated funds, including $15,000 for the DIS Project, with the remainder designated for a scientific review and a results book. The PESCA Program has $89,000 unallocated as of September 30, 2001, which will be used for a new open call for education activities proposals.
