Report of the Fourteenth Meeting of the IAI Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC)

This report documents the fourteenth meeting of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), held on November 27-28, 2000, in Washington, DC. The division funds about 400 of the 1,200 proposals it receives annually to facilitate international professional experience for young US researchers and new international partnerships.
• The SAC recommended that IAI prioritize seeking new funding sources and suggested that the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA) initiative represents a significant opportunity for IAI to lead efforts in Latin America. Additionally, the NSF indicated it might consider a proposal from IAI for a new program with funding of approximately US$ 300,000.00.
• Regarding the Collaborative Research Network (CRN) and Initial Science Program (ISP), the SAC determined that progress reports should remain confidential between the IAI and SAC, with only final reports made available to the public on the website, provided the Principal Investigator (PI) grants permission.
• The IAI is seeking to strengthen its institutional linkages and membership, noting that while no new countries have joined recently, there are promising contacts with Honduras and El Salvador. The institute is also looking to enhance its relationship with the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA).
• The SAC emphasized the need for PIs and Co-PIs to publish their research in high-quality journals and suggested that IAI should actively encourage researchers to contact these journals.
