Annex to the Report of the Director to the EC and the CoP (document 6)

The IAI's July 2001 annex outlines new capacity-building initiatives, including the IAI Science Grant Phase II (funded by US$ 300,000 from the NSF) and co-funded training activities utilizing US$ 60,000 from the PESCA program. These initiatives target junior researchers and under-represented countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to foster new Cooperative Research Networks and interdisciplinary training.

• The IAI Science Grant Phase II (IAI SGP-II) provides one-time awards for one year to facilitate the development of larger science programs and new Cooperative Research Networks. Funding is limited to 30-50 K for research and 10-15 K for meetings, with a total funding amount of US$ 300,000 from the NSF plus unspecified additional funds. Priority is given to junior researchers not previously involved in IAI programs, students of ISP or CRN projects, and those who are not current PIs, requiring researchers from institutions in at least 3 ratifying countries.
• The IAI proposes co-funded training and education activities based on the success of Summer-Institute-type training and the availability of US$ 60,000 in remaining funds from the PESCA program. These 15-day activities, with total funding of 80-100 K, will be based on an open call for proposals for themes of societal relevance involving both natural and social scientists. IAI funds will be prioritized for scientists from countries previously identified in PESCA as having less active participation in IAI research programs.
• The IAI has identified several other new activities, including a scientific synthesis of the IAI program, a Human Dimensions Open Science Meeting, a Sustainability Science Workshop, the development of a long-term marketing strategy via a CTF report, press releases in member countries, internal IDB seminars, and a High Level Ministerial Meeting.
