This document consists of reports from the fourteenth and fifteenth meetings of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), held in November 2000 in Washington, DC, and May 2001 in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil. The meetings focused on the management of the Collaborative Research Network (CRN) and Initial Science Program (ISP), the integration of Human Dimensions (HD) into global change science, and the strategic direction of IAI's funding and institutional partnerships.

• The US Global Change Research Program is prioritizing the development of science that is directly applicable to decision-makers, with a specific focus on 'Vulnerability and Resilience issues associated to Global Change'. The program aims to integrate the 'Human Dimension (HD)' into global change issues, including areas such as industrial transformation and land use/cover change (LUCC).
• The NSF Division of International Programs (INT) manages approximately 0.5% of the NSF budget and is responsible for about 5% of international expenditures, with an annual budget of roughly US$ 25 million. It funds about 400 of the 1,200 proposals it receives annually across all scientific fields and global regions.
• The SAC identified a need for a standard reporting format for CRN projects to ensure homogeneous data collection regarding publications, supported students, and training and education (T&E) activities. Current reporting is described as inconsistent, with some projects providing information in fragmented formats, such as one project that submitted reports as '11 separate files'.
• The SAC evaluated several CRN projects, noting that while some are scientifically successful, many are 'weak in human dimension aspects'. For example, the project on Treeline Environments was described as 'very strong in science, but weak in human dimension aspects', and the Andean Amazon Rivers Analysis and Monitoring (AARAM) project was similarly noted as 'not strong in human dimensions'.
• IAI's proposal to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA), led by Dr. Osvaldo Sala, was declined because the MEA decided to fund projects only in Asia and Africa, excluding Latin America.
• The SAC recommended a new funding strategy for proposals that prioritizes research projects over start-up workshops, specifically targeting junior researchers and alumni of summer institutes. Proposed grants are small, ranging from US$ 20,000 to US$ 50,000, or a maximum of US$ 100,000 for two years, requiring involvement from at least three countries.
• The SAC suggested revising the IAI Data Information System (IAI-DIS) strategy toward a simpler website-based version. This approach would involve the IAI main page providing links to individual project web pages, where PIs would be responsible for entering and maintaining data.
