1 Regional Workshop on Sustainability Science: Science and Technology for Sustainable Development

A pre-proposal for a Regional Workshop on Sustainability Science, intended to explore the priorities and needs for a new scientific and technological field of inquiry to address sustainable development from a regional perspective.

• A previous workshop at Sweden's Friibergh Manor in October 2000 identified that the current global development path is unsustainable, as efforts to support a growing population are damaging the Earth's essential life-support systems.
• Sustainability science aims to expand the understanding of nature-society interactions, specifically by integrating global processes with the ecological and social characteristics of specific sectors and places across scales from local to global.
• The proposed regional workshop aims to act as a 'laboratory of ideas' to discuss the priorities for sustainability science. Expected outcomes include a report published in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, and the creation of an initial regional network on sustainability science.
