Principios sugeridos respecto a contribuciones en especie (“in-kind”)

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) established principles in May 2004 for accepting in-kind contributions. While generally viewed as donations for science, they cannot replace annual Operating Budget contributions from the 2004/2005 fiscal year onwards. They may, however, be used to settle debts from before 2004/2005 if they offset current budgeted expenses and receive Executive Council approval. Proposals must include activity descriptions, timelines, providing organizations, estimated values, and the specific debts being offset.

• The IAI accepts in-kind contributions, which are generally treated as donations for science. However, these contributions cannot be used as a substitute for annual contributions to the Operating Budget for the 2004/2005 fiscal year and subsequent years.
• In-kind contributions may be used as an alternative to pay off overdue annual Operating Budget debts from before the 2004/2005 fiscal year, provided they offset budgeted expenses of the IAI Executive Directorate for the 2004/2005 fiscal year or later. Such proposals require prior approval from the Executive Council.
• Proposals for in-kind contributions must be submitted to the IAI Director and include a description of the activity and timeline, the providing agency or organization, the estimated value with supporting documentation, and the specific fiscal year of the overdue debts to be offset. The Executive Director then determines if the activity is an acceptable compensation for a budgeted activity before sending the request to the Executive Committee.
