Training and Education Activities

The IAI provides scholarships, fellowships, and workshops to build scientific capacity in the Americas, with a priority on Latin American researchers. Key initiatives include the IAI/UM Summer Institute on Interdisciplinary Science, a regional course on climate variability in Mesoamerica, and a partnership with Indiana University's ACT. The IAI is transitioning its Summer Institute model to a new call for proposals following a change in NSF funding and is exploring partnerships with the IACD, Inter-American Development Bank, and Brazil's CNPq.

• The IAI prioritizes capacity building in Latin America by supporting scientists from the region for training either locally or abroad to develop a cadre of researchers skilled in multinational and multidisciplinary collaboration.
• The IAI and University of Miami (UM) organized a series of Summer Institutes on Interdisciplinary Science in the Americas from 1999 to 2001. The third institute, scheduled for July 15 to August 3, 2001, focused on 'Integrated Management of Water Resources in the Americas: Challenges and Emerging Issues' and included 22 participants from 14 IAI member countries.
• A Regional Training Course on Climate Variability and Extreme Events for the Mesoamericas took place from February 10-22, 2001, in San Jose, Costa Rica. This joint effort involved multiple organizations, including NOAA/OGP, NSF, USAID/OFDALAC, WMO, and the University of Costa Rica, and trained professionals from 10 Mesoamerican countries in applying climate forecasts to policy planning for agriculture, public health, and disaster prevention.
• The IAI provides fellowships for undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate scientists; for example, the Initial Science Program and Collaborative Research Network supported 92 and 29 students respectively across Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. levels.
• Following the non-renewal of a specific NSF grant for the IAI/UM Summer Institute, the IAI plans to issue a new call for proposals to co-sponsor similar activities. Additionally, the IAI is pursuing cooperation with the Inter-American Agency for Cooperation and Development (IACD) for South-South knowledge transfer and a new fellowship agreement with Brazil's CNPq for doctoral and post-doctoral levels.
