Training and Education Activities

This report outlines the training and education (T&E) activities of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) as of June 2001. The IAI focuses on capacity building in Latin America through scholarships, fellowships, and interdisciplinary summer institutes designed to foster collaboration between natural and social scientists across the Americas.

• The IAI prioritizes capacity building for scientists from Latin America to develop a cadre of researchers trained in multinational and multidisciplinary collaboration. Support is provided at undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral levels through various mechanisms including scholarships, fellowships, training workshops, short courses, and educational materials.
• The IAI and the University of Miami (UM) organized a Summer Institute on Interdisciplinary Science in the Americas from 1999 to 2001. The third iteration, scheduled for July 15 to August 3, 2001, in Miami, Florida, focused on "Integrated Management of Water Resources in the Americas: Challenges and Emerging Issues." This institute selected 22 participants and 2 observers from 14 IAI member countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, USA, and Venezuela.
• A Regional Training Course on Climate Variability and Extreme Events for the Mesoamericas took place from February 10-22, 2001, in San Jose, Costa Rica. This joint effort involved multiple organizations, including NOAA/OGP, NSF, USAID/OFDALAC, WMO, IRI, CRRH, the University of Costa Rica, and the IAI. It drew professionals from 10 countries: Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, and Venezuela.
• Since 1996, the IAI has granted fellowships to scientists associated with formal IAI science programs. According to the provided table, the Initial Science Program supported 22 Bachelor, 55 Master, and 15 Ph.D. students, while the Collaborative Research Network supported 7 Bachelor, 5 Master, and 17 Ph.D. students.
• Future T&E plans include soliciting new institutional co-sponsors for Summer Institute-like activities following the loss of a specific NSF grant. The IAI is also exploring partnerships with the Inter-American Agency for Cooperation and Development (IACD) for South-South cooperation, the Inter-American Development Bank for educational seminars on global environmental change, and Brazil's CNPq for a doctoral and post-doctoral fellowship program.
