Report of the Data Policy Working Group

The Report of the Data Policy Working Group provides an update on the status of the IAI-DIS, a distributed database system designed to disseminate Global Change research information via the Internet using standardized formats.

• As of June 2001, the IAI-DIS system has only two operational nodes, located in Brazil and Uruguay. The Brazilian node references data from IAI and INPE, while the Uruguayan node is functional but has not yet had any data submitted to it.
• The Working Group has completed several technical and administrative tasks over the past year, including the inclusion of all Final Reports from ISP1 and ISP2 in the Brazilian node and the addition of links from the IAI-DIS homepage to IAI project homepages.
• Efforts to integrate IAI-DIS with LBA-DIS from CPTEC/INPE require modifications to the source code and recompilation, necessitating additional support from CIESIN.
• The Working Group determined that the IAI budget is insufficient to develop an independent system at the cutting edge of DIS technology. Consequently, they recommend an incremental approach, including a web-based approach for low-volume data projects and an eventual migration away from the IBM platform.
• A proposal submitted to the World Bank's infoDev program was not funded.
