Estrategias efectivas de adaptación y reducción de riesgos por fluctuaciones de precios y cambios climáticos: lecciones de la crisis del café en Mesoamérica

This research paper examines how coffee producers in Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Costa Rica respond to extreme weather events, pests, diseases, and price volatility since 1997. It identifies the drivers of vulnerability and evaluates the effectiveness of individual and group adaptation strategies to mitigate the impacts of global change.

• Coffee producers in the study areas perceive market threats as more significant than climate variability, although even minor climate changes can push crops out of their optimal ecological and economic range, especially in marginal areas with excessively dry or flooded soils. Many producers continue coffee cultivation despite the risks because alternative options are considered even riskier.
• To mitigate negative climate events, producers employ several strategies: planting alternative crops, diversifying income sources, or migrating. In Honduras, migration is utilized by a quarter of the producers, often resulting in difficult social and legal consequences.
• Adaptation to global change is facilitated by three primary factors: improved access to information regarding climate and market fluctuations, better access to credit and insurance, and an increased capacity to organize and maintain local groups, such as cooperatives.
• Environmental degradation is linked to the removal of shade trees for other crops, which increases risks of soil degradation, erosion, and biodiversity loss, while also reducing carbon sinks. In landscapes dominated by secondary forests, conservation goals should include sustainable transitions between agriculture and forests.
• Political responses are more effective for medium-term drivers, such as new market opportunities or pests, than for slow-onset processes like climate change or declining soil fertility, which are often omitted from political agendas. The research suggests that policies must be adjusted to local perceptions and contexts, as no single policy proposal is likely to cover the region's diverse conditions.
