Cambios en la partición de flujos de agua en el Chaco Árido al reemplazar bosques por pasturas

This research paper examines how replacing native dry forests with pastures to increase livestock productivity affects water flow partitioning in the Arid Chaco plains of San Luis, Argentina.

• Replacing native dry forests with pastures leads to a decrease in direct interception of precipitation and an increase in surface runoff, particularly during large and intense precipitation events where runoff in pastures reached approximately 28% compared to 0% in forests.
• Pastures exhibit higher potential evaporation at the soil level during summer (7.0±0.9 mm/day) compared to forests (4.4±0.9 mm/day). While deep drainage was null for both cover types, pastures showed a vertical displacement of salts in the profile down to a depth of 2 meters.
• The transition from forest to pasture results in a more homogeneous distribution of soil moisture following precipitation events due to reduced water redistribution by the canopy and terrain surface. This suggests that establishing pastures in former forest sites reduces the fraction of precipitation available for transpiration and increases the potential risk of water erosion.
