La Universidad de Buenos Aires y la interdisciplina

This research paper reviews the institutional forms of interdisciplinary initiatives at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) from 1983 to 2015, analyzing how these initiatives evolved in response to neoliberal policies in the 1990s and subsequent national scientific and technological policies under the Kirchner presidencies.

• Since the return to the rule of law in Argentina in 1983, the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) has implemented various interdisciplinary initiatives, notably the Centro de Estudios Avanzados (cea). During the 1990s, neoliberal government orientations led universities to align interdisciplinarity with cooperation networks involving private business sectors and broader government entities.
• Following the cessation of the cea in 2003, interdisciplinary interaction remained on the UBA agenda through the creation of Interdisciplinary Programs and their integration into the regular programming of the university's Secretariat of Science and Technology.
• Interdisciplinary research was consolidated within the national political agenda between 2003 and 2015 under the presidencies of Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, focusing on socially applicable knowledge, innovation, and social inclusion. This period saw the creation of the Centro Interdisciplinario de Estudios de la Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación (ciecti) within the national Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation (mincyt), and was further supported by the participation of Argentine scientists in international research agency calls.
