Growth and production of the copepod community in the southern area of the Humboldt Current System

This research paper analyzes copepod growth and production in the coastal upwelling and transition zones off central-southern Chile from 2004 to 2006, finding that increased wind-driven upwelling may lead to a decline in zooplankton biomass.

• Copepod biomass (CB) and copepod production (CP) were higher in the coastal upwelling zone (less than 50 km) and showed a substantial decrease between 2004 and 2006. Annual CP ranged from 24 to 52 g C m-2 year-1, with a mean annual P/B ratio of 2.7.
• Copepod production is estimated to consume approximately 8% of annual primary production (PP) most of the time, though it can reach up to 60% in the upwelling zone.
• Between 2004 and 2006, the copepod community structure shifted from a dominance of large-sized forms to small-sized species, coinciding with more persistent and extended upwelling. This suggests that increased wind-driven upwelling in coastal systems may cause a negative trend in zooplankton biomass due to increased offshore advection.
