Evaluacion de los servicios ecosistemicos marinos en las estaciones de serie de tiempo de la red latinoamericana Antares

This project brief describes a multidisciplinary effort to evaluate marine ecosystem services, specifically the role of phytoplankton, across the Antares network of eight time-series stations in Latin America. The project integrates in situ historical data, remote sensing, and bio-geochemical modeling to monitor phytoplankton populations and their impact on carbon sequestration and fisheries, while developing socio-economic indicators to assess how these services affect human populations and decision-making.

• The project utilizes data from 40 sampling cruises to analyze chlorophyll A, phaeopigment, nutrients, phytoplankton taxonomy, and pigment composition. In the Argentine Sea, the team is specifically studying ocean acidification through the analysis of the carbonate system in the EPEA time series.
• Bio-geochemical models coupled with physical ocean models were used to simulate the period from 1968 to 2007, focusing on phytoplankton, zooplankton, detritus, oxygen, carbon, and nutrients (N, P, Si, Fe). However, regional model testing for net primary productivity indicated that available data are insufficient to constrain model parameters, necessitating further ground truthing to align modeled chlorophyll profiles with actual observations.
• Calculations for potential fish productivity in the South Brazil Bight, based on a mean primary production of 188 g C/m2/yr and a food chain of 2.8 links, suggest a fish yield 30-60 times higher than the FAO reported catch of 0.08 MT from 1991-2000. This indicates that fishery resources in the Bight are likely food-limited.
• The project incorporates a socio-economic component established in 2015 to study the effects of phytoplankton ecosystem services and the perceptions of decision-makers. Stakeholders are categorized into three groups: those who affect ecosystem services, those directly affected by variations in these services, and those managing the relationship between services and human use.
