Cambios en las estrategias de ingresos económicos a nivel de hogares rurales en el norte de la amazonía ecuatoriana

A comparative study of rural households in northern Ecuadorian Amazonia between 1990 and 1999 shows a shift from farm-based agricultural income to off-farm income and timber, alongside an overall decrease in average household income.

• Between 1990 and 1999, migrant settlers in northern Ecuadorian Amazonia saw off-farm income become their primary source of revenue, increasing from 25% to 43%, while on-farm agricultural income dropped from 74% to 56%.
• Average household income from timber increased significantly from 0.8% in 1990 to 13.4% in 1999.
• The local population experienced increased poverty, evidenced by a decline in the average total household income of 396 USD between 1990 and 1999.
